What Is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is a patient-centred, precision approach that starts with the vital question—“why?” rather than “which pill?”. It carefully maps your unique biochemistry, lifestyle, environment and mindset, then builds a bespoke plan to correct the hidden imbalances that conventional care often leaves untouched. The result is true balance—no guess-work, no one-size-fits-all protocols, no masking of symptoms—just clear, measurable progress toward lasting well-being.

When You Feel Like a Mystery No One Can Solve

to attract patientsYouve been to doctor after doctor. Test after test. Maybe youve tried different medications. Yet, despite all the effort, you still dont feel better.  If this sounds familiar, youre not alone. Its one of the most common stories I hear in my practice. People who know something is off in their bodies, yet conventional medicine tells them everything is “normal. This is where Functional Medicine comes in.

Why Functional Medicine Is A Smarter Approach to Chronic Illness?

In the 1990s, Dr. Jeffrey Bland saw a huge gap in healthcare. Conventional medicine was brilliant at saving lives in emergencies—treating infections, performing surgeries—but when it came to chronic conditions like fatigue, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, and autoimmune disorders, it fell short. Patients were left with prescriptions, surgeries, or a vague “just live with it” diagnosis—but no real answers. At the same time, two major shifts were happening in medicine:
1. Doctors began recognising that lifestyle—what you eat, how you sleep, how you manage stress, and what toxins you’re exposed to—plays a massive role in chronic illness.
When these factors are out of balance, they interfere with the body’s most powerful function: its ability to regulate and to heal itself. Illness isn’t just about genetics or bad luck—it’s about how we live.
2. Advances in lab testing allowed doctors to see deeper into how the body really works.
New tests made it possible to assess digestion, hormones, detoxification, metabolism, and the immune system in ways that simply weren’t possible before.  For the first time, doctors could now pinpoint imbalances that were previously overlooked—and actually correct them.
These breakthroughs made it clear: Chronic illness isn’t random. It’s the result of deeper imbalances.
From this, Functional Medicine was born—a science-based, root-cause approach that doesn’t just manage disease but works to resolve the underlying imbalances that have been silently driving your symptoms in the first place.

What Types of Illness Does Functional Medicine Work Best For?

The short answer? Almost any chronic or complex condition.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
If you’ve been diagnosed with IBS but still don’t have real answers, if you’re managing an autoimmune disease with lifelong medications, or if you’re struggling with stubborn weight that won’t budge no matter what you do—Functional Medicine is worth exploring.
Thyroid Issues
It’s also a game-changer for thyroid disorders, menopause symptoms, and hormonal imbalances that aren’t responding to conventional treatments.
Chronic Multisystem Disorders
Then there are the conditions that mainstream medicine struggles to treat successfully—like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, unexplained chronic pain, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, or EMF Sensitivity. These aren’t vague, untreatable disorders; they’re signs of deeper imbalances that can be addressed when you look at the whole picture.

What Makes Functional Medicine So Effective?

To understand why this approach works so well, let’s break it down into four key principles and provide real examples from my clinic.

Principle 1: Functional Medicine Doesn’t Just Focus on Symptoms—It Focuses on What’s Causing Them.

Imagine your car’s “check engine” light turns on. Conventional medicine is about getting the light to turn off in whatever way possible. Functional Medicine lifts the bonnet and figures out why the light turned on in the first place.

Symptoms are the body’s way of saying, Hey, something’s not right! So instead of just treating the symptoms, Functional Medicine asks:

  • What is your body trying to tell us?
  • How do your lifestyle, diet, environment, and personal history play a role?
  • What deeper imbalances are causing these symptoms?

Jean’s Story: The Rash That Wasn’t Just About Her Skin

Jean, in her mid-50s, came to me with a rash that wouldn’t go away. Her GP had prescribed a steroid cream, which worked temporarily—but the rash always came back. Over time, it wasn’t just her skin that suffered. She withdrew socially, avoided outings, and anxiety crept in. Her doctor’s next step? A referral to a dermatologist and a prescription for antidepressants.

But Jean wasn’t ready to go down that route. When I sat down with her, I didn’t start by looking at her rash—I started by listening to her story. That’s when the pieces came together.

Jean had gone through two devastating losses: her older sister had recently passed away, and before that, she had spent five years caring for her mother until she died. She was carrying years of grief, stress, and emotional exhaustion. Her body couldn’t hold it in anymore—so it spoke through her skin.

Addressing the Root Cause: Instead of more suppressive creams, we focused on the real issue. I guided Jean through specific Energy Medicine and Mindfulness techniques to help her process the grief and release stress. Within just a few sessions, she felt lighter. Then, we focused on her skin. I tailored a nutrient-rich skin cream that didn’t aim to disappear the rash but to support and nourish her skin’s integrity

  • 6 weeks in? The rash was fading.
  • 6 months in? It was completely gone.
  • But the biggest transformation? Her confidence and joy returned.

Jean’s case highlights why treating symptoms alone isn’t enough. By listening to her story, we uncovered and addressed the real cause—helping her heal in a way conventional medicine never could.

Principle 2: Look Beyond Standard Lab Tests—They’re Just the Starting Point.

Imagine walking into a pitch-black room with a tiny flashlight. You can see a little—but most of the space remains a mystery.

That’s what relying only on standard lab tests is like.

They aren’t wrong—they’re just limited in what they can reveal.

Laura’s Story: The “Normal” Thyroid Tests That Weren’t So Normal

Laura, 46, was exhausted. Her hair was thinning. Anxiety was creeping in. She felt completely drained.
Her doctor suspected hypothyroidism. But when her lab tests came back “normal,” she was left with no answers—and no hope.
That’s when she came to me.
I repeated her thyroid tests, but this time, I looked deeper.
• Her TSH was at the high end of normal—a classic sign of borderline hypothyroidism that was missed.
• A simple salivary cortisol test revealed sky-high stress hormone levels, which were suppressing her thyroid function.
The moment Laura saw her salivary cortisol result, something clicked. She knew she was burned out, and her body was showing it.
The Game-Changing Plan
I started her on:
A natural desiccated thyroid hormone replacement
Key nutrients like selenium & magnesium to support her thyroid
Energy Medicine techniques to lower stress & restore balance
Within weeks, her energy returned, her hair stopped shedding, and her anxiety disappeared.
Laura’s case proves that we can find answers when we have the tools to look deeper.

Principle 3: There’s Usually a Safer and More Effective Remedy Than Pharmaceuticals.

As a doctor, I have the ability to prescribe medications—and when absolutely necessary, I will. But they are never my first choice. Why? Because, more often than not, there’s a safer, more effective way to heal.

After decades of working with patients, one truth stands out: The most powerful medicine isn’t found in a pill—it’s found on your plate and in your daily habits.

Tom’s Story: Escaping the Migraine Trap

Tom, a 38-year-old professional, came to see me after battling chronic migraines for years. He had tried every medication his doctor recommended, but nothing provided lasting relief. He was stuck in a cycle of short-term fixes and rebound headaches, exhausted by the frustration of it all.
“I don’t want to be dependent on pills for the rest of my life,” he told me.
So, we took a deeper look—not just at his symptoms, but at his lifestyle.
Unpacking a Migraine: A Day in the Life of Hidden Triggers
Tom’s daily routine was a blueprint for disaster:
• Morning: He skipped breakfast, relying instead on a large coffee as he rushed to work. By mid-morning, he was jittery and grabbed another cup just to keep going.
• Lunch: An afterthought—usually a processed sandwich or fast food eaten at his desk.
• Afternoon: Hours hunched over a screen, shoulders tense, eyes strained. Hydration? Not even on his radar.
• Evening: Too drained to cook, so dinner was something quick and packaged. Then, he’d unwind with late-night scrolling, cutting into precious sleep.
Rinse and repeat.
As we mapped this out together, the lightbulb went on. His body wasn’t broken—it was simply overwhelmed. He needed a reset.
The Power of Real Food and Lifestyle Shifts
We started with simple but powerful changes:
Eating nutrient-dense, whole foods to balance his blood sugar
Hydrating throughout the day to prevent dehydration-triggered headaches
How to breathe and reconnect with his body
Prioritising quality sleep to allow his body to heal
Adding movement and stress-reducing practices to his routine
Directing him to educate himself about alternative non drug-based approaches to migraine
Within a month, his migraines had significantly improved. By three months, they were almost nonexistent. But the best part? Tom wasn’t just symptom-free—he felt empowered because he was beginning to understood his body in a way he never had before.
This is why I say: The most powerful medicine isn’t in a bottle—it’s in the daily choices you make.

Principle 4: Healing from Chronic Illness Requires Time and Commitment to Personal Change

We live in a world of quick fixes—instant downloads, fast food, same-day delivery. But when it comes to healing, there are no shortcuts. Chronic illness doesn’t happen overnight, and reversing it takes time, patience, and a commitment to real change.

The Nine-Month Healing Blueprint

I often tell my patients, “Give yourself nine months to heal a chronic condition.” Why? Because, just like pregnancy, healing follows a natural rhythm. You can’t rush it. The body needs time to reset, rebuild, and restore balance.

Many people discovering Functional Medicine expect immediate results, but a more complete healing is a process. And when you give your body what it needs, transformation happens.

Rachel’s Story: From Exhausted to Energized

Rachel, a 50-year-old teacher, came to me at the end of her rope—physically drained and emotionally depleted. Chronic digestive issues and unrelenting fatigue had stolen her quality of life. She wanted answers, but more than that, she wanted to feel like herself again.
I gave her my usual advice: Commit to nine months of focused, consistent changes.
At first, she was skeptical. She had spent years searching for quick solutions, hoping for a magic bullet. But she decided to trust the process.
We developed a plan centered on:
A nutrient-dense diet to heal her gut
Mindfulness and stress reduction techniques
A sleep routine to restore her energy
The first few weeks were tough. Breaking old habits is never easy. But then, something shifted.
By three months, her digestion improved, and her energy levels started to rise.
By six months, the chronic fatigue had faded.
By nine months, she still had some fatigue but was 85% better than when she started. Now Rachel wasn’t just surviving—she was beginning to thrive.
She didn’t just reverse her physical symptoms—she reclaimed her confidence, vitality, and connection to her body. She realised that true healing doesn’t come from the latest supplement at the health store, the doctor’s office or any of that —it comes from within.
This is the heart of Functional Medicine. It’s not about chasing symptoms. It’s about empowering you to take control of your health.

The Downsides of Functional Medicine: What You Need to Know

When I first discovered Functional Medicine in the mid-90s, I was hooked. It put a name and a framework to what I had always known intuitively: You can’t treat illness by pulling off the leaves of a weed—you have to go for the roots.
The approach made sense. It still does.
But as much as I believe in Functional Medicine—and have seen it transform countless lives—it’s not perfect. Like any medical approach, there are pitfalls.
Here’s what you need to know.

1. Overtesting and Expense: When More Isn’t Always Better

Functional Medicine gives us access to an incredible range of advanced testing—hormone panels, microbiome analysis, toxin screenings, genetic profiling. These tests offer a deep dive into your biochemistry, revealing what’s happening beneath the surface.
But here’s the problem: more testing isn’t always better.
Some practitioners over-rely on extensive testing, ordering multiple panels at once, sometimes before even addressing the basics—nutrition, sleep, movement, stress, and toxic exposure.
This can leave patients:
Drowning in data they don’t fully understand
Overwhelmed by too many recommendations
Facing steep out-of-pocket costs, since many of these tests aren’t covered by insurance
The solution? Work with a practitioner who is strategic about testing—someone who explains why a test is necessary, how it impacts your treatment, and whether it will change your course of action.
An remember what I shared earlier. Sometimes, the most critical data doesn’t come from a lab—it comes from listening to your body.

2. Finding the Right Practitioner: Not All Experts Are Created Equal

As Functional Medicine grows in popularity, so does the range of training and expertise among practitioners. Some have years of clinical experience, advanced certifications, and a proven track record of patient success. Others? They’re still learning.
And while passion for Functional Medicine is great, it doesn’t replace clinical experience.
Finding the right practitioner can feel a bit like online dating—you want someone who’s the right fit for you.
So how do you find the right one?
Look for a practitioner who listens deeply. They should take the time to understand your history – not just run tests.
Ask about their experience. How long have they been practicing? Do they have experience treating your specific condition?
Follow your gut. A good practitioner makes you feel heard, respected, and empowered so you feel you have a partner and guide by your side on your healing journey.

Conclusion: Functional Medicine Means a Return to Full Functionality

Functional Medicine isn’t perfect. No system is.
But when applied thoughtfully and strategically, it has the power to do what conventional medicine often cannot—restore true, lasting health by addressing the root cause of illness.
It’s a different kind of medicine—one that
It honours your story—because your symptoms don’t appear in isolation.
It uses the best of modern science and ancient wisdom—combining cutting-edge medicine with the foundational principles of how the body truly heals.
It empowers you to understand your body—so you no longer feel like a passive participant in your own health.
It gives you the tools to heal—because real medicine is about more than prescriptions; it’s about knowledge, choices, and action.
It moves you beyond symptom management—so you can shift from simply “getting by” to thriving.
If you approach Functional Medicine with awareness, patience, and guidance, it can be one of the most transformative choices you ever make for your health.
My hope? This article ignites something in you—a spark of curiosity, a determination to seek answers, and, most importantly, a renewed hope that whatever illness or challenge you’re facing, healing is possible.

What Patients Say About Dr Sharkey

Dr. Sharkey was the first medical doctor I met who understood how difficult it is to access real help if you are in the medical system when you have had breast cancer surgery and now have lymphodema to deal with.  Marie, Dublin

Four years ago, we took our 9-year-old to Dr. Anthony Sharkey because of nosebleeds. We had already been to the ED department several times, and the ENT doctor didn’t have much to offer. In 10 minutes, Dr. Anthony Sharkey performed an energy Medicine technique. He suggested a traditional remedy; she had not had one nosebleed since. E. Dublin

Menopause has been a difficult journey for me.  I have been sceptical of alternatives before but when I knew that Dr. Anthony Sharkey had a foot in both camps I decided to book an appointment. before I consulted with Dr. Anthony Sharkey I had a lot of anxiety and I was having panic attacks. I found this very difficult to deal with. There was a build up inside of me – I was worried about my loved ones. I am delighted and thrilled to have discovered Dr. Sharkey. Meeting him has been a huge benefit to me. I definitely found these few months were so much easier to get through compared to all the other years especially last year. I now have a fantastic inner calm physically and mentally and I can handle panic and anxiety much more easily. Thank you! P. Kildare

My 17-year-old had a painful knee that was causing him to limp and to have to use a crutch at school. He loves GAA and had to stop training and playing. We brought him to physios, etc., who suggested he had a ligament issue and recommended an MRI scan. Before the scan, I got him to Dr Anthony Sharkey. After three sessions, he was walking normally and training usually. It is like a miracle. Also, we have not needed get a scan. R. Naas Co. Kildare

Our 7-month-old granddaughter had terrible eczema on her face. Her doctor prescribed a mild steroid cream that worked only when we used it. When we stopped using it, the eczema returned in a day or two. After advice from the first phone call session with Dr Sharkey she immediately started improving.

Previously, I had to go to Turkey to find a functional Medicine doctor. It is so great to now have my own medically trained doctor who can can understand the advanced functional medicine blood tests. Y. Dublin

I took one of Dr. Anthony Sharkey’s Mindfulness courses several years ago, and I can mark that time when all relationships changed for the better. Why? Because I learned how to love myself. The first of many benefits I noticed was that I was sleeping better. Denise, Galway
